Some people make use of moving averages as a way to determine what the trend is. It really depends on what chart you are looking at however. For example, I have seen a scalping system on the 5-min chart that uses the 50- EMA (exponential moving average) as trend determinant. Other traders who use the daily chart use the 200- SMA (simple moving average) to determine the trend. Others use a moving average crossover system to determine if there has been a change in the trend. Of course, these are just a couple of ways to determine a trend. It would be better if you combine this with the use of trend lines on both short-term and long-term charts to get an overall idea of whether the pair is trending or not.

You can use both the stochastics and the RSI as filters to your trending system. To prevent yourself from getting whipsawed more often, you may want to see if the stochastics is above 70 and the RSI above 50 (but below 75) first when you are given a buy signal by your system (MA crossover, etc.). On the other hand, you should only sell if the stochastics is below 30 and the RSI below 50 (but above 25). Of course you can still adjust the figures depending on your trading style.
