Why would UAW refuse to do any concessions on labor costs until 2011?

UAW contract expires in 2011 but GM could go bankrupt in 2009 so don't they stand to lose their jobs AND retirement benefits. GM has to compete with Slave Labor in a global market, as in "made in China....by slaves" before its all over. Look ahead.

If you listen to the press conference by the UAW this morning, they were talking about buyouts and really retirements rather than actual wage cuts. So the current workers would not have to work for less, just the new hires. This is similar to the concessions that they gave the auto workers in the last round of contract negotiations. And they finally came off the rule that everyone at theplant make the same amount, so the broom pusher made as much as the assembly line worker. The UAW knows that if they can get the government to keep the automakers in business until the new Congress and President gets in, they will have a better chance of getting more money for the automakers and not have to give up anything. Lets' not get off the horse until we are sure that it is dead, we wouldn't have to walk anymore than neccessary.

The UAW did not want to appear weak to its over charged members. I expect the union to go into a heavy lobby mode to try to shake loose some government money without any serious concessions from the union. I am from Illinois and we know that politicians can be bought. Washington isn't any different.
