Easy! The Canadian dollar is called the Loonie because Canada's one dollar coin has the an image of a loon (a bird) on one of its sides.

From what I know (I'm Canadian btw) Its cause there is a Loon on the back. Ironically we also have a two dollar coin here whose name stemed from the loonie...we call it a twoonie (SERIOUSLY!)...There were talks about getting a 3 dollar coin which totally failed....I guess its cause those in the west indies mite have been buying those up like crazy maybe (TRINI ;) LOLL) But seriously, loonies and twoonies here are very much the norm and the loonie from what i remember got its name because the Bird (Loon in the Water) is what was on the first dollar coin that came out in the late 1980's (1987 is what wiki states it at).
