If you'll notice, that since around March 2009, equities and commodities have sky rocketed because risk appetite has increased. The reason why people are being open to investing into higher yielding assets (which are also more risky), is because they feel that the recession is coming to an end and that there have been more and more signs of recovery. In turn, the NZD has appreciated as it has benefited from a rise in commodities (take note, the Kiwi is a com-doll) and a 2.5% interest rate - 2nd highest amongst all majors during the recession. For these reasons, the NZD has been on a rise the past 6 months.
