The Swiss National Bank (or SNB) is notorious for intervening in the markets to make the franc weaker. How come? Well, a weaker franc helps boost the economy, as it would make their exports more affordable to foreign importers. This in turn would be beneficial to the economy. Lately though, the SNB has loosened its stance on the value of the franc, which is why it posted all time highs versus teh euro last month.

If the franc keeps on appreciating, Swiss exports become relatively more expensive to its trade partners. This could then dampen demand for Swiss products, which could eventually have a negative effect on Switzerland's economy. That's why the SNB usually tries to talk down the franc (by threatening to intervene or actually intervening).
