A trend has higher lows in an uptrend and lower highs in a downtrend. Think of an escalator. You're either going up or down.
A range is where price has sideways direction. No matter where price goes, it returns to it origin. Think walkalator or a moving walkway like in airports.

When someone refers to a range, it normally means that price action has been trading between 2 levels for a certain period of time. For example, someone might say that USDJPY has been trading within a range between 96.00 and 98.00. When price hits either of these price levels, it normally reverses and heads off to the other direction.
When someone says that the pair is in a range, it probably means that the pair has been heading in one direction for quite awhile. For example, if a certain pair has been registering higher highs and higher lows, then one might say that the pair is in an uptrend.
