What does a narrowing of range of MACD signifies? Simply a narrowing of price range?

It just means that the trend isn't that strong, and that the pair's direction is generally sideways. It does not necessarily indicate that the price range is getting tighter. Indicators are still just indicators though. Sometimes you'd see the MACD move sideways yet the price keeps on going higher and higher.

Generally, it is considered that when the MACD falls below the signal line it can be regarded as bearish and may well indicate a time to sell, whereas when the MACD rises above the signal line indicating a bullish trend which may indicate an upward trend in price.
