How can I sell sterling in a currency pair GBP/USD when I don't have sterling?

My account is in USD. Can I still short GBP/USD?

You can still short GBP/USD even if your account is in USD. That's one of the many advantages of the FX market! In fact, you can sell virtually any currency pair that you want regardless of what currency your account is denominated in. You can even short GBP/JPY or EUR/GBP even if your account is in USD.

Yes. You can sell the GBP or any other currency for that matter even if you do not currently own them. The essence of short selling is the borrowing and selling of securities, currencies in this case, with a goal of buying them back at a lower price. Of course you need to settle what you borrowed once you bought back what you originally sold. The difference in prices (when you sold them and bought them back) should be your profit or loss.

Yeah, you can still trade. Your broker will let you borrow any currency you want to trade. ;)
